the supremes, the most commercially successful girl group in pop history, were one of the jewels in motown records artist stable. given wonderful material by motown s amazing songwriters, the group scored numerous number one pop hits, as did singer diana ross when she left the group and went solo, and motowns bright, modern, and uptown image as a label had a lot to do with the way these ladies gracefully and elegantly presented themselves and took over a song. two dozen of those number one hits, both as the supremes and as ross solo, are collected here, including the timeless classics *come see about me*, *you cant hurry love*, *you keep me hangin on* and *stop! in the name of love*. the album also features a bonus remix of *you keep me hangin on*.

after the striking debut release on nothing odd recordings found label owner sam smith sitting comfortably alongside baby ford for an exploration of subliminal house and techno, nor002 finds smith donning the alias monty the fly and expanding on his own vision for stripped-down dance music brimming with psychoactive tendencies. across the three tracks there is a diverse range of moods being drawn on, from the meditative to the mechanical, all fused together by what some might consider an obsessive eye for detail. there s meditation in the air in places, with mysterious pads and heavy splashes of reverb soaking out into some corners in the time-honoured dubwise spirit of transcendental electronic music. elsewhere brushed percussion and disembodied vocals shape out a more sinister message, lending themselves to a sound world both immersive and disorientating in one fell swoop.

low-down and dirty jazz goes right back to the early 1900s in storyville, after the bands had played their hot tunes in the evening for dancing couples, the musicians would head off to the after-hours joints and play a less energetic but more bluesy kind of music, enabling them and their late-night audiences to get through to the early hours of the morning without suffering total exhaustion. and nobody in new orleans laid into the blues so low down and dirty as buddy bolden, whose funky butt became a staple in the repertoire of the citys early jazz bands.
